Antarctic ice shelf 'hangs by a thread'

Mia Moore

The British Antarctic Survey have captured satellite and ground images of the collapse of a large area of the Wilkins Ice Shelf in Antarctica. It is estimated that the shelf has been there for hundreds if not thousands of years and was the size of seven Manhattans. The scientists monitoring the area blame Global Warming for the collapse and further melting of the pole.

Professor Vaughn from the BAS, says, "Wilkins is the largest ice shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula yet to be threatened. I didn't expect to see things happen this quickly. The ice shelf is hanging by a thread - we'll know in the next few days or weeks what its fate will be."

The video provided by Panglosstech shows the United States Gulf Coast in various stages of increased sea levels if the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets melt completely.
